Seasonal Hints
Winter
-
Brush heavy snow off evergreens branches to prevent breakage
-
Blanket beds with boughs of discarded Christmas trees to protect hardy perennials against sudden damaging thaws

Save wood ashes from your fireplace (good source of potassium) in a dry container to spread on garden beds in spring
Spring
Fertilize deciduous shrubs, trees and hollies
- Snap off the top half of “Candles”, or new growth of pines, firs, and other conifers to encourage compact growth
- Plant outdoor tubs, window boxes, and other containers, but be prepared to move plants indoors if late frost threatens
Summer
Trim Juniper, Yews, and Hemlock hedges
- Pinch off fading flowers to promote longer season of bloom
- Divide and transplant bearded Irises and Madonna Lilies
- Keep lawns watered as needed, but avoid overwatering or watering late in the evening or overnight. Be sure to provide sufficient water to newly planted trees and shrubs.
