Seasonal Hints

Winter

  • Brush heavy snow off evergreens branches to prevent breakage
  • Blanket beds with boughs of discarded Christmas trees to protect hardy perennials against sudden damaging thaws
  • Save wood ashes from your fireplace (good source of potassium) in a dry container to spread on garden beds in spring

Spring

  • Fertilize deciduous shrubs, trees and hollies
  • Snap off the top half of “Candles”, or new growth of pines, firs, and other conifers to encourage compact growth
  • Plant outdoor tubs, window boxes, and other containers, but be prepared to move plants indoors if late frost threatens

Summer

  • Trim Juniper, Yews, and Hemlock hedges
  • Pinch off fading flowers to promote longer season of bloom
  • Divide and transplant bearded Irises and Madonna Lilies
  • Keep lawns watered as needed, but avoid overwatering or watering late in the evening or overnight.  Be sure to provide sufficient water to newly planted trees and shrubs.

Fall

  • Sprinkle perennial beds with high phosphate fertilizer to promote strong root growth
  • Water trees and shrubs thoroughly before the ground freezes
  • Spray evergreen shrubs with an antitranspirant to reduce winter damage to foliage
